Start with the job, then gather the evidence

Read the vacancy before opening a blank document. Separate the responsibilities from the essential requirements. Make a rough list of work, projects, training, and achievements that relate to those requirements. This prevents the common mistake of describing your entire history with equal detail. A useful CV is selective: it gives the employer enough relevant evidence to decide whether to speak with you.

Write down accurate titles, organizations, and month-and-year dates. Gather links and credentials while you still have the source material available. Do not estimate a result simply because a number would look impressive. If you cannot verify a metric, describe a deliverable or a process improvement instead.

Build a readable order

Put your name, role, and reliable contact details first. Follow with a short profile, recent experience, education, relevant skills, and languages. For a student, education and projects can come before employment. For a researcher, publications may deserve their own section. The order should make your strongest relevant evidence easy to find.

Use one consistent date format and short section headings. Leave enough space between sections for a reader to scan. Choose a simple layout if the employer uses an automated recruitment portal, and follow any file-format instructions in the vacancy.

Write bullets that show contribution

Use an action, context, and outcome: “Organized weekly stock checks and reduced missing-item reports.” Explain your personal contribution rather than claiming the entire team’s work. Two or three useful bullets usually say more than a long paragraph of routine responsibilities.

Keep your profile concrete. Name your specialty and supporting evidence, then identify the contribution you want to make. Avoid “hard-working team player” unless you also demonstrate those qualities with an example. A short description of a real project is stronger.

Review the exported file

Check names, dates, punctuation, email, and every link. Read the PDF at normal size on a phone as well as a larger screen. Copy a paragraph to confirm it is selectable text. Ask a trusted person to look for ambiguity, especially if you are writing in a second language.

Save your CV data as JSON before closing the browser or changing devices. Make a targeted copy for each application by adjusting the profile and the most relevant bullets. Track which version you sent so you can prepare for the interview with the same information.
